Description
The Foxtail is a Northeastern Austrailian native.
This palm grows fast, easily adapts and is stunningly beautiful.
Known for its rapid growth and unique beauty the Wodyetia bifurcata has grown exponentially in popularity over the last decade or so.
One of the unique visual markings of the Foxtail palm is derived from its leaf scars. They will often reflect a copper color when the mid day sun shines bright on the trunk of the palm. It gives the palm an otherworldly glow.
The Foxtail’s genus name derived from an aboriginal man whose last name was “Wodyeti”. He was touted as the only person remaining from his tribe that understood the plants in this area of Queensland.
Bifurcata comes from Latin, meaning “twice divided” and refers to the leaf structure that gives this palm its full and fluffy looking frond. Another plus is that the fronds are self cleaning. The boots fall to the ground on their own once they are shed.
The Foxtail grows fast in full sun and will tolerate shade conditions. It is interesting to note that even as a juvenile the Foxtail will take full sun and use it to its growth advantage.
Reaching heights up to 30’ the Foxtail has noble qualities much like a Royal palm. Another benefit of the Wodyetia bifurcata is that it will not get as large as a Royal and will never dwarf a home While always adding a regal look to the landscape.
