If you are not familiar with the Areca palm also known as the Dypsis lutescens keep reading to understand more.
The Areca Palm is seen everywhere in South Florida. Prolific cultivation within nurseries has come about in order to meet the landscaping demands this palm commands.
As with any palm it has its supporters and detractors. Each perspective is valid. At the end of the day each landscape has its own unique set of priorities which will dictate the use of one palm or another.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Arecas do best in zone 10 and up. You will find them on the border of zone 9b and 10. In zone 9b they will do best in protected areas, usually near the water. Lakes, rivers and the ocean are great at regulating air temperature. If a freeze does enter a boarding zone, your Areca will be in better shape near the water.
As with most palms it will bear fruit that is edible. It is not filling but will suffice as a snack. The Areca palm hedge or screen is widely used in Florida. It is full and bushy but can be thinned out to expose the canes which coincidentally look a lot like the culms of non invasive clumping bamboo.
The landscape criteria may inspire a look that requires the exposure of the canes. They are a smooth beautiful silver/green color. The fronds are a feathery in appearance with a beautiful arch. Hence one of the nick names Feather Palm.
You can find Areca palms for sale all over the internet!
Most of these are in containers. Field grown materials are your go to palm for hedging and screening applications. Container materials are good for indoor decoration and can eventually be planted in the ground.
