Picking the Right Palm for Orlando

As a landscape designer or architect, you may have clients reaching out to you wanting you to create a space for them in Orlando with palm trees. Palm trees are certainly a great means of establishing a tropical feel in both residential and commercial settings. Since Orlando is located in USDA Zone 9B, it is important to choose palms that will thrive in that area. Here are some suggestions for the right palms:

Canary (Phoenix canariensis). Canary Island Date palms are one of the most widely used landscape specimens in the south east. They are slow growing but are prized for their bold and formal appearance. Plus, they are extremely hardy allowing them to be planted throughout much of the southern U.S. including the Gulf Coast States, Texas, and California. The Canary palm produces a massive solitary canopy that is absolutely memorable and highly visible. And, with consistent manicuring, its majestic crown shaft resembles a pineapple.

Sylvestris (Phoenix Sylvestris). Hailing from India, the Sylvestris is one classy palm! Reaching heights of 30 to 40 feet, this beauty has a slender trunk with an interesting diamond pattern created by leaf scars. Palmco can do a special cut to make the deep orange of the trunk really stand out in your landscape. Many landscapers are using this palm on golf courses, to line streets, and as centerpieces for luxury homes.

Reclinata (Phoenix Reclinata). This palm originates from Africa. It is an unusual and beautiful palm that grows in huge clumps that can make a dramatic specimen plant for yards, parks, and campuses. Its gracefully curving stems make a powerful statement against large backdrops. And, if your client is desiring some dramatic affects, add some spot lighting at night to really show off this palm as an impressive centerpiece.

Paurotis (Acoelorrhaphe Wrightii). If you are looking for a native Florida palm, this is a great choice! Also known as the Everglades palm, the Paurotis is very versatile. With moderate maintenance it can be made into a beautiful focal point in any yard. It naturally bears dense foliage nearly to the ground so it could be an excellent choice for screening or hedging. It does well in full and partial sunlight and when it matures it could be up to 30 feet tall and have a canopy spread as wide as 15 feet. But it does grow slowly so don’t expect that size to happen overnight.
