Best Palm Options for Miami

When it comes to working with your customers in Miami, it is important to understand that they are located in USDA Zone 10B. That means you need to choose palms that are able to handle the heat of that locale. Here are our experts’ suggestions for the best palm options for Miami:

Adonidia (Adonidia merrillii). Originating in the Philippines, the Adonidia Palm is often called the Dwarf Royal Palm and the Christmas Palm. It grows moderately quickly to a height of 10 to 20 feet, with gently arching bright green fronds that grow from the top of the crownshaft. In summer, it produces light green buds that turn into creamy white blossoms followed by ripe red fruits in December. This attractive palm can have a single, double or triple trunk.

Alexander (Ptychosterma elegans). Hailing from Australia this is another moderate growing palm that will reach heights around 20 feet tall. It really likes narrow spaces and presents well in them thanks to its slender trunk and smaller canopy. The Alexander loves the sun but is not fond of cold winds. Though it naturally grows as a single, it can be manipulated to grow as doubles and triples. Plus, it’s versatile enough that it can even be used indoors as long as you provide it with a large container and enough time to acclimate to the indoor space.

Bottle (Hyophorbe lagenicaulis). Discovered in the Mascarenes, a set of small islands off the east coast of Madagascar, the Bottle palm is an incredible sight. It is eye-catching due to its bizarrely swollen trunk and stunted height, only growing to 12 feet tall. Traditionally, people believed that the Bottle palm stored water in its swollen trunk, but that isn’t the case. In fact, we don’t really know why it’s shaped this way, but we love the way it looks!

Foxtail (Wodyetia bifurcata). The Foxtail is a Northeastern Australian native. It grows fast, easily adapts, and is stunningly beautiful. The popularity of this palm has grown exponentially over the last decade. One of the unique visual markings of the Foxtail palm is derived from its leaf scars. They will often reflect a copper color when the midday sun shines bright on their trunks. It gives these palms an otherworldly glow. This palm will get as tall as 30 feet and grows a lot faster when it is exposed to direct sunlight.
