Palm Suggestions

The Phoenix roebelenii is always worthy of consideration.

The common name for this palm is the Pygmy Date and its origin is southeastern Asia.

Therefore, this is a tree that does best in the warmer climates of zones 10a-11. While it is a relatively short palm, only reaching 10 feet in height, it is mostly pest resistant and moderately tolerant of drought. It can withstand short bursts of 15°F temperatures and is grown all over, from Florida to California, and as far north as Mississippi.

If the Roebelenii doesn’t catch your eye, there is always the Phoenix sylvestris, or Silver Date Palm.

Its tolerance zone is significantly larger, from zones 8a-11, and it can reach heights of 40 feet. This palm has fruits that are utilized to make wines and jams, making it an ideal choice for the front of a bar! It’s a beautiful specimen and is frequently used as a focal point in luxury landscape designs.

If you are hoping for more of a hedge style décor, you might consider the Areca Palm.

This is a very thick, low growing palm with feather-like fronds. It is drought resistant and versatile, capable of being maintained in pots or in the ground. Originally from Madagascar, these palms reach 20 feet in height and are good choices for zones 10a-11 but can survive in zone 9b if in a protected area near water.

Another tree for your consideration is the European Fan Palm.

Perfect for a wide range of environmental settings, the European fan palm can successfully grow in zones 8a-11 and withstand temperatures as low as 10°F (as long as the lows are not long lasting). This tree can be trimmed to grow as a single focal point but often looks best in its natural cluster form. It is quite drought tolerant and slowly reaches 10 feet in height.
