Palm Trees for Privacy Screening

Areca Palm (Dypsis lutescens): Palmco is a leading supplier of field-grown Arecas in a variety of sizes. The dramatic clustering palm features many trunks that spring up from the base of the plant. Sometimes called the Feather Palm, its fluffy, fine-textured fronds give it a lush, full look. Arecas can grow to 20 feet tall and 10 feet in diameter, making them well-suited to privacy screens, hedges and landscape backdrops. The Madagascar native is not very cold hardy, so it is best-suited to Zones 10A and 11.

Fishtail Palm (Caryota mitis): You can recognize this beautiful palm by its swirled layers of ruffled fronds that resemble the jagged tail of a goldfish. It is a bipinnate palm, the only palm with this unusual leaf anatomy. Fishtail palms are clumping palms and are a great alternative to bamboo. Reaching 20 to 25 feet tall, they have exploded in popularity in recent years. If planting them in a row for a privacy screen, place them about 5 or 6 feet apart and they will fill in faster. At Palmco, we grow them in the field, some with as many as 7 heads.

Lady Palm (Rhapis excelsa) – If you are looking for a palm tree that loves partial shade, the Lady Palm can handle it. In fact, it actually needs shade in order for its fronds to stay dark green. This shrub-like clumping palm will reach about 7 to 8 feet tall, so it is well-suited to low screening, single specimen plantings, container plantings, beds, borders and as a privacy screen. It can also be grown indoors. The Lady Palm can withstand temperatures into the mid 20’s with minimal damage.

Paurotis Palm (Acoelorrhaphe wrightii): The Paurotis or Everglades palm originates in South America but has been in Florida long enough to be considered a native species. It is capable of reaching heights of 20 to 30 feet with a canopy spread of 15 feet in diameter. This versatile clustering palm is dense and thickly covered almost to the ground, making it ideal for privacy screening and hedge applications. In late spring it blooms with white flowers and half inch fruits that start off green, turn orange, and then go black when ripe, adding visual appeal to all your landscape design installments.

Palmco offers a wide range of spectacular palm trees for sale to wholesale customers, many of which are suitable for privacy screening. We will advise you about the care each unique species needs to thrive in your area. Give us a call at (239) 283-1329 for more information.
