Many exotic varieties of tropical bamboo have only become available in the last decade.

This plant has steadily grown in popularity within the landscaping community.

Architects are designing with it. Landscapers are planting it. Homeowners are asking for it…

But, what are the best ways to use it?

Uses For Bamboo In Landscaping:

  • Privacy Screens:
Bamboo is most commonly used in the U.S. for privacy screening. It’s relatively inexpensive and fast-growing. It can grow from 6 feet to more than 30 feet in a relatively short period of time. Bamboo can also be used as a barrier in just about any setting. Use it as an attractive screen for utility boxes, air conditioners, and other building components.

  • Hedges:
In a more formal landscape, most tall clumping bamboos can be pruned and shaped several times a year to maintain the form you want. If you want a taller hedge, it usually won’t take more than one growing season to achieve your ideal height.

  • Noise And Dust Barriers:
Bamboo’s dense growth habits make it ideal for keeping away noisy traffic, noisy neighbors, highway noise, dust from nearby farms and other nuisances in urban and rural environments.

  • Windbreaks:
Unlike trees that blow down in strong winds, bamboo weathers storms nicely. It’s also lightweight and hollow so, if canes snap, it’s unlikely that they would do as much damage as downed trees.

Add tropical beauty and create visual impact in any landscape with a beautiful bamboo. They are especially attractive on patios and around pools and also look spectacular when combined with palm trees and other tropicals.

Here are a few of our clumping bamboos that may not be familiar to you:

Asian Lemon Bamboo

Bambusa eutuldoides ‘Viridivittata’ is a stunning Chinese bamboo that can grow to 25 feet with 1-inch diameter culms. Bright yellow culms are accented by occasional green stripes and dark green leaves. This plant is moderately hardy and frost tolerant. Its relatively short height and low branching makes it ideal when you need to block out a two-story building.

Dwarf Buddha Belly Bamboo

Dwarf Buddha Belly Bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris ‘Wamin’) has unusual bulges (“bellies”) above and below each culm’s internodes that make it a real attention-getter. Fortunately, it produces the most consistent bellies in warm, humid climates like Florida’s. It grows to a height of 12 to 15 feet and has 4-inch diameter culms.

Tropical Blue Bamboo

This popular medium-tight clumping bamboo from China makes an attractive ornamental and a beautiful dense privacy hedge. Bambusa chungii features light green leaves and nicely spaced thin-walled culms that develop a stunning powder-like, soft, light blue bloom. The plant will grow to a maximum height of about 35 feet with 3-inch diameter culms.
