Quick Palm 101
Most palm trees can be differentiated by their fronds:
- Pinnate leaves, or “feather” leaves, generally have two rows of leaflets that remind you of feathers on each side of the stem.
- Palmate leaves, or “fan” leaves, have leaflets that radiate out from the base of the leaf. They remind you of an open hand with fingers radiating out from the palm.
- Other frond variations include costapalmate, bipinnate, simple, bifid, or, in some cases, a completely irregular leaf shape.
- Palms also grow in two different patterns – solitary or clustering.
A solitary palm has one tall, straight trunk like a column, and new leaves are produced at the top.
Clustering palms grow new stems from ground level (developing mostly underground), but the stems are attached together in a clump and are part of one plant. The multi-trunk species of palm trees are usually shorter than the single trunk species.
Phoenix Reclinata
Commonly referred to as the Senegal Date Palm, the Phoenix Reclinata, or Reclinata for short, originates from Africa. It’s moderately salt tolerant and grows slowly. This is a beautiful and unusual palm that is best known for the fact it grows in huge clumps that make it both striking and dramatic in appearance.
Phoenix Reclinatas are powerful statement makers when placed against large backdrops thanks to their gracefully curving stems. And these palms can thrive in containers when you have to confine them to urban areas. Add some spot lighting at night to truly show off the beauty of these palms.
The Reclinata will reach heights of up to 30 feet and can withstand temperatures as low as 25 degrees Fahrenheit. The dates that these palms produce are smaller than the ones you would buy in the store, but they are edible, and you can eat the flower buds too!
Also, in its native habitat the Reclinata’s fiber is used to make ropes, mats, string, roofing material, and baskets. Plus, a brown dye is produced from the leaves and the sap is brewed to make a palm wine. The Phoenix Reclinata truly is an amazing tree for any landscape you encounter.
When purchasing palms for your landscape, it’s important to ask us about the varieties that will grow best in your area. USDA hardiness zones are not set in stone. Cold-hardiness wherever you are planting may not be an issue, but other factors, such as rainfall, soil, drainage, wind, humidity, daylight, and heat, will impact the health of your palms.
