Palm Trees FOR USDA Zone 10B

Southeast Florida is the only part of the continental U.S. with a true tropical climate. The winters are mild here, but there can be occasional cold fronts for short periods from November to March and a sporadic frost in inland, rural locations. Summers are hot and humid, and high temperatures range from 88° to 92 °F.

Many palm trees love this climate and make an impressive statement in commercial and residential landscapes throughout the state. Small varieties with visible, attractive trunks and fluffy, full-to-the-ground palms make spectacular backdrops when surrounded by small or mid-size flowering shrubs. Large palms, whether broad and majestic or slim and willowy, make striking silhouettes in any environment.

Before you buy palm trees, take a good look at your proposed location and visualize the palm trees as full-grown. Some varieties, like the Queen Palm, may grow rapidly and interfere with power lines. Others, like the Maypan Coconut Palm, are spectacular, but may not be the ideal choice for a parking lot. Let us know where you intend to plant your palms, and we can help you choose the perfect specimen for the location.

Here is a small selection of our palm varieties that grow beautifully in Miami, Hialeah, Coral Gables, Doral, Opa-locka, Key Biscayne, and throughout USDA Zone 10b:

Adonidia Palm (Adonidia merrillii) – Originating in the Philippines, the Adonidia Palm is often called the Dwarf Royal Palm and the Christmas Palm. It grows moderately quickly to a height of 10 to 20 feet, with gently arching bright green fronds that grow from the top of the crownshaft. In summer, it produces light green buds that turn into creamy white blossoms followed by ripe red fruits in December. This attractive palm can have a single, double or triple trunk.

Maypan Coconut Palm (Cocos nucifera) – This tall, single-trunk palm originates in Jamaica. The Maypan is a hybrid and has been engineered to be exceptionally cold hardy palm and resistant to Lethal Yellowing Disease. It grows at a moderate rate to 50 to 80 feet tall and is virtually maintenance-free; when a frond dies or a coconut ripens, it will fall from the tree on its own. Palmco only grows coconuts from Jamaican Certified seeds.

Triangle Palm (Dypsis decaryi) – When you need an attention-getting palm, the unusual shape and coloring of the Triangle Palm fits the bill. Instead of the usual crownshaft, it has overlapping leaf bases that form in three vertical columns on the main stem, creating a triangular shape. The leaves are a unique powdery blue-grey and arch gracefully upward from the trunk. Growing slowly to 20 or 25 feet, this gorgeous palm is drought-tolerant, cold-tolerant and self-cleaning.
