Tips for Choosing a Palm Tree

Jupiter and Palm Beach County have a tropical savanna climate with mild and dry winters (average lows of 55°F), and hot and wet summers (average highs of 90°F with brief daily thundershowers). Frost is extremely rare.

When selecting the ideal palm tree for your resort hotel, golf course, avenue planting, or residential development in Zone 10a, keep the following factors in mind:

Size at maturity – That small container-sized palm tree you bought at the local nursery won’t stay that size forever. Our graceful Royal Palms, for example, can reach up to 50 or 60 feet tall and 5 to 10 feet wide. Keep your overall design in mind so the palm doesn’t overpower the landscape or cause potential damage to buildings, roofs or power lines. For something smaller, the extremely hardy European Fan Palm is a great choice. A super slow grower, it can take 10-15 years to reach a height of 7 feet.

Temperature – In Zone 10 or 11, consider a heat-loving variety like our Silver Bismarckia, one of the most beautiful and desirable fan palms around. Although it thrives in areas with adequate rainfall, it’s also tolerant of heat and drought and is a great palm for the warmest areas of Florida. Most Bismarckias are grown as single trunks, but they can also be grown as multiples for an extra level of impressiveness.

Sunlight – Some palm trees prefer shade or partial shade. When you need a small palm (6 to 12 feet) that will thrive in shaded understory or container plantings, the lush Lady Palm, which loves deep to partial shade, is ideal. Otherwise, consider our Chinese Fan Palm. It’s a favorite in Florida landscapes with its wide-spreading crown and bright green fan-shaped leaves and will grow in shade, partial shade or sun. Palmco offers single, double, triple and multi Chinese Fan configurations.

Water – Most palms don’t enjoy having wet feet and need well-drained soil to thrive. If you are working with a swampy area or one with long periods of standing water, however, consider the water-loving Paurotis Palm. Acoelorrhaphe wrightii, also called the Everglades Palm, a Florida native palm that’s salt tolerant and hardy in most of the Florida Peninsula. The beautiful clustering palm grows slowly to a height of 25 feet with a spread as wide as 15 feet.
