Fishtail Palm- You can recognize this beautiful palm by its swirled layers of ruffled fronds that resemble the jagged tail of a goldfish. It is a bipinnate palm, the only palm with this unusual leaf anatomy. Fishtail palms are clumping palms and are a great alternative to bamboo. Reaching 20 to 25 feet tall, they have exploded in popularity in recent years. If planting them in a row for a privacy screen, place them about 5 or 6 feet apart and they will fill in faster. At Palmco, we grow them in the field, some with as many as 7 heads.

King Alexander Palm- King Alexander palms are from Australia and will do best in USDA Zones 10B-11. They provide your property with a tropical feel and are a highly desirable centerpiece that can reach heights of 40 feet tall.

King Alexanders are very unique palms. Their trunks will remind you of the Adonidia, while their fronds are reminiscent of coconut palms. And, they are more cold hardy that both the Adonidia and Maypan Coconut palms, able to withstand temperatures as low as 26 degrees Fahrenheit.

Royal Palm- Popular along the streets of many cities for their grace and beauty, Royal Palms have a smooth gray trunk, a bright green crownshaft, and dark green arching fronds. They bloom with yellow flowers in the summer. Royals can reach up to 60 or 70 feet tall with a growth rate of around a foot each year.

This Cuban palm can be sensitive when transplanted.

Queen Palm- Native to Brazil and Argentina, Queen Palms grow best in full sun, growing as much as 6 feet a year to 30 or 40 feet.

Their trunks are singular, gray, and smooth with scars of old fronds. The lacy fronds are dark green and pinnate with double rows of leaflets. Waxy flower clusters burst from large pods during the summer. In early winter, green date clusters appear. The spherical-shaped dates eventually turn bright orange and hang in long clusters. Careful pruning of the stalks will keep them from littering the area.
