Palms that Will Love Bonita Springs

To help you determine which plants will work best for you, the USDA Hardiness Zones are the best indicator of whether a particular plant can tolerate the Florida winters. Because Bonita Springs is located in USDA Zone 10A, these are some of the palms that will love Bonita Springs:

  • Bottle Palm This is a very tropical plant originating from the Mascarenes, a group of islands off of Madagascar’s eastern coast. The Bottle palm’s unique trunk, which resembles a swollen globe, is very eye-catching. It is not cold tolerant and will show signs of injury on its fronds when the temperature drops to 32°F. If this occurs, just leave the fronds alone until the end of winter and then trim them in the spring. Otherwise you will endanger the emerging fronds in the event there’s another cold snap. This is a slow growing palm that will not grow beyond 12 feet tall. It is an incredible accent piece or entryway focal point due to its peculiar appearance.
  • Fishtail Palm You can recognize this beautiful palm by its swirled layers of ruffled fronds that resemble the jagged tail of a goldfish. It is a bipinnate palm; the only palm with this unusual leaf anatomy. Fishtail palms are clumping palms and are a great alternative to bamboo. Reaching 20 to 25 feet tall, they have exploded in popularity in recent years. If planting them in a row for a privacy screen, place them about 5 or 6 feet apart and they will fill in faster. At Palmco, we grow them in the field, some with as many as 7 heads.
  • Caranday Palm This stunning but rarely seen palm comes from South America. It is known to withstand temperatures down to 20 to 25 degrees Fahrenheit, loves full to partial sun, and performs best in moist, well-drained soil. The Caranday palm is easy to grow and maintain. If not trimmed too aggressively, the fronds will create a beautiful cascading fountain effect.

The reality is palm trees are symbols of relaxation and paradise. And they’re not all 80 feet tall with coconuts! In fact, we have many unusual palm varieties available in various heights, colors, and textures that will add depth to your landscape.
