Using Mast Trees in Your Landscape

Well-suited to USDA Zones 10a to 11 and the warmest areas of Zone 9b, the striking Mast Tree, or Polyalthia longifolia ‘Pendula’, is an exceptional subtropical substitute for the Italian Cypress.

The tree is perfect for narrow areas because it grows quite tall but stays slender. In India and Sri Lanka where it originates, the leaves are used as temple decorations and the trees are commonly used as street trees to reduce noise pollution.

The Mast Tree’s lush foliage ranges from light lime green to coppery brown to a glossy dark green as the trees age. Leaves remain on the tree in all seasons, almost completely covering the trunk and creating an eye-catching and colorful focal point. In the spring or summer, they also produce star-like pale green flowers that attract butterflies and birds.

One of the tree’s best attributes is its ability to form a solid wall of green while using just a small amount of ground space. It grows symmetrically to 30 to 45 feet tall by 4 to 5 feet wide at maturity and provides an excellent vertical accent in any landscape.

Mast Trees are ideal for:

  • lining driveways or avenues
  • privacy screening
  • tall hedges
  • shade
  • architectural accents
  • noise screening
  •
  • xeriscaping

How to Grow and Care for Mast Trees

Mast Trees are easy to maintain, have very little leaf drop, no notable pest threats, are drought-tolerant, moderately salt-tolerant, prefer well-drained rich clay, loam or sandy soils, and will thrive in full sun and tolerate partial shade.

Make sure the soil is well-drained. When watering, lightly soak the soil and do not water again until the top two inches have dried out. Overwatering may ultimately kill the trees. They don’t like to be wet and will rot if left sitting in water for extended periods.

Mast Trees are moderate growers and require space to stretch out (to a full-grown width of 4 to 5 feet). Choose a location at least 10 feet from other trees or shrubs.
