About Phoenix roebelenii

Phoenix roebelenii, also known as the Pygmy Date Palm, grows slowly to about 12 feet tall but makes a big impression. These palms are most often grown as singles, doubles, and triples, but can be grown with up to 6 heads, creating a beautiful centerpiece for many gardens.

The palm tree hails from areas of Southeast Asia, where the climate mimics USDA Zones 10 to 11. It loves tropical warm temperatures and humidity and can tolerate temperatures down to 25°F. It can be used outdoors in a variety of settings such as parks, gardens, and in a container on a deck or in an entryway. It can also be used indoors and is a great palm for shopping centers and restaurants.

How to Care for Phoenix roebelenii

Soil: Plant in soil that drains well.

Water: Finding the right balance is important. The Pygmy Date Palm can tolerate a bit of drought, so water about three times a week to give it a more lush, tropical appearance.

Light: In coastal areas with good humidity, this particular palm prefers full sun. Further inland and in desert areas, they do best in filtered light or partial sun. When growing indoors, give the plant a quarter turn every week to expose all sides to sunlight.

Fertilizer: As with most palms, the Phoenix roebelenii should be fertilized twice a year with a quality palm fertilizer.

Pruning: The Pygmy Date Palm does not have a self-cleaning trunk and requires old leaf removal to keep its beautiful appearance. But wear protective eyewear or its sharp spikes can hurt you or injure your eyes.

Pests: This palm is known for being mostly pest resistant
