North Port Wholesale Bamboo Plants
Landscape contractors, architects, and developers who are interested in wholesale bamboo plants to create stunning hedges and privacy screens in North Port landscaping projects should explore the clumping bamboo varieties available from Palmco.
Unlike “running” bamboo that spreads aggressively beyond its assigned area, these “clumping” species are NOT invasive. They have a pachymorph rhizome system with short, thick roots that grow in a close circular clump, expanding gradually by only a few inches per year. You can plant them near buildings without having to worry about them taking over.
How to Maintain Clumping Bamboo
Clumping bamboo is quite simple to maintain!
As new shoots break through the ground each year, choose some of the larger ones that you want to grow into mature culms. Remove older, less productive culms and spindly stems to make way for healthy new growth.
Cut off or stamp down the unwanted shoots at ground level, making sure that you space attractively between culms.
You may also want to remove older culms (5 years or older) to give the clump a more youthful look. It’s even possible to modify the shape and size of the bamboo to form the plant into topiary or small, nicely trimmed hedges if you want to keep it small.
What are Some Uses for Bamboo?
Mankind has been using bamboo for thousands of years!
Bamboo has a high strength-to-weight ratio, making it ideal for use as a building material and for tools and weaponry. It has long been used for furniture, shelter, scaffolding, irrigation pipes, utensils, fishing rods, and even as a food source.
As a landscaping material, clumping bamboo has a myriad of uses as well:
- A single attention-getting specimen
- A privacy screen to divide space
- A living alternative to a fence
- A hedge
- A noise barrier
- A method of providing shade
- A windbreak or storm barrier
- A backdrop for other tropical plants
- A soil stabilizer on riverbanks
In just a few seasons bamboo can provide privacy and beauty to any landscape.

The following bamboo plants are some of the ones we carry that are suitable for the North Port area:
Tropical Blue Bamboo is a popular clumper from China that has light green leaves and nicely spaced thin-walled culms with a mystical pale blue powdery bloom. With its 35-foot height and 3” diameter canes that grow upright, it will create a dense privacy hedge.

When grown in the shade, new culms are a dark green with silver powder. In sunny conditions, culms will have more of an orange hue. Oldhamii Bamboo makes a stunning hedge, screen or wind barrier.
Alphonse Karr Bamboo is one of the best screen or hedge bamboos. The dense Chinese bamboo grows to 20 to 25 feet and features bright yellow 1- inch diameter culms and random green stripes that give a golden glow to any garden. New shoots and culms often have a pinkish hue.
