Mast Young Trees

Mast Young Trees

If you are in the market for a great windbreak, screening, or statement piece—or virtually any other application that calls for tall, slender, evergreen trees—then you owe it to yourself to take a look at Palmco’s young Mast Trees.

What Is a Mast Tree?

Native to India and Sri Lanka, the Mast Tree (Polyalthia longifolia ‘Pendula’) grows to 30 to 45 feet tall by 4 to 5 feet wide at maturity with a straight, thin trunk (once used to build ship masts), and layers of feathery, wavy-edged leaves that hang from drooping branches.

Mast trees are popular alternatives to Italian Cypress Trees for a variety of reasons. They are easy to maintain, which sets them apart from Italian Cypresses (these can be quite difficult in South Florida), and they are bold, tall, and eye-catching.

Tall, narrow Mast Trees can be used as tall hedges, privacy screens, noise screens, windbreaks, to line driveways, avenues and walkways, or as architectural accents to frame entryways, soften building corners and vertical edges, and cover vertical drain-pipes. They are also suitable for narrow spaces because they grow quite tall but stay slender.

Other Offerings

Palmco doesn’t just sell Mast Trees. We also offer the highest quality selection of field-grown Florida Fancy (FF) palms and exquisite varieties of clumping bamboo. Here are a few varieties that may not be familiar to you:

Caranday Palm

Well-suited to Zones 9 to 11, the Caranday palm is not well-known but is a stunning tree. When planted in groups of two or three at staggered heights or as standalone focal points, these palms make a grand impression.

It can withstand temperatures of 20 to 25 degrees Fahrenheit and grows slowly to an average height of about 40 feet tall in cultivation. It loves full to partial sun, and performs best in moist, well-drained soil.

The Caranday palm has unique costapalmate leaves (a combination of palmate (fan) and pinnate (feather) leaves) that are blue-green or silver-green on the surface and light gray underneath. If not trimmed too aggressively, the fronds will create a beautiful cascading fountain effect.

Asian Lemon Bamboo

Asian Lemon bamboo is great for both aesthetic applications and privacy screening. It is a tight clumping bamboo that reaches heights of up to 25 feet, which makes it great for screening. It also features deep, impressive colors that attract the eye immediately, making it great as a centerpiece.

This bamboo can be used for privacy screening, but it can also be used simply for its beauty. When used for its aesthetic properties, it makes a spectacular centerpiece.

Whether you are in the market for a great screening bamboo, a palm tree that will grow even in cold environments, or a tall, regal Mast Tree to block wind or noise, accent a space, or line a border, Palmco has you covered. Our young Mast Trees are some of the finest you will find and few others will have one! Get in touch with us at (239) 283-1329 to discuss your design requirements.
