Mast Trees Clearwater, Florida – Wholesale
Clearwater, Florida is warm and humid most of the year, with few nights of frost. Wholesale Mast trees from Palmco will thrive in your environment and are an excellent solution when you need a vertical accent for your client’s landscape.
When landscaping resort hotels, luxury residential properties, shopping centers, and golf courses in Pinellas County, landscapers, architects and designers have few options for tall, narrow columnar trees that provide beautiful evergreen foliage. The Italian Cypress, a common choice, is prone to spider mites and fungal disorders in South Florida.
Enter Polyalthia Longifolia “Pendula” or the Mast Tree! It belongs to the Annonaceae family, one of the largest families of flowering plants, commonly known as the custard apple family, which is populated by familiar relatives such as Ylang-Ylang (Cananga odorata), Soursop (Annona muricata), and Sugar Apple (Annona squamosa).
Mast Trees will transform any plain landscape. They have layers of feathery, wavy-edged leaves that hang from drooping branches and closely hug the trunk. As they mature, the beautiful contrast of new golden, coppery brown leaves against light lime green and older dark-green leaves make a spectacular show. For a brief period in spring, they bloom with masses of light green, star-shaped flowers.
Growing and Caring for Mast Trees
Plant Mast Trees in full or partial sun in rich clay, loam or sandy soil, and make sure the soil is well-drained. The trees are moderate growers and require space to stretch out (to a full-grown width of 4 to 5 feet).
When watering Mast Trees, lightly soak the soil and then do not water again until the top two inches have dried out. Avoid overwatering or it may ultimately kill the tree. Mature Mast trees are drought-tolerant.
Mast Trees are not very tolerant of cold weather and are best suited to USDA Zones 10a to 11 and the warmest areas of 9b. We don’t recommend them for use north of coastal Hillsborough County on Florida’s west coast or Indian River County on the east coast.
Uses for Mast Trees
Mast Trees are great for framing entryways and tall structures, covering vertical drain-pipes, lining avenues and driveways, as tall hedges, as architectural accents, and as privacy, noise and windbreak screens. They are wonderful in narrow spaces because they grow quite tall, but stay slender.
