Palms That Will Flourish in Kissimmee
Palmco grows many desirable palms that will thrive in Kissimmee, Florida, including these beauties:
Caranday Palm: Caranday (Copernicia alba; aka Wax Palm) is not well-known but is a stunning palm tree. It can withstand temperatures of 20 to 25 degrees Fahrenheit and grows slowly to an average height of about 40 feet tall in cultivation. It has unique costapalmate leaves (a combination of palmate (fan) and pinnate (feather) leaves) that are blue-green or silver-green on the surface and light gray underneath. Caranday palms make a grand impression when planted in groups of two or three at staggered heights or as standalone focal points.
European Fan Palm: Chamaerops humilis is the only palm native to Europe and is also known as the Mediterranean Fan Palm. Its fan-shaped leaves provide an exotic look in any landscape. Growing slowly to about 10 feet tall, it makes an ideal focal specimen in spaces of any size. It is wind-resistant, very cold hardy to 10 degrees Fahrenheit, is drought-tolerant, and does well in salty areas. The European Fan Palm is popular with landscapers and developers for its ability to thrive in a variety of locations and conditions.
Nitida Palm: Livistona nitida comes from a remote location in Northern Australia known as the Carnarvon Gorge and is also known as the Carnarvon Fan Palm. On average, it will grow to 40 or 50 feet and is well-suited for group plantings at staggered heights and for avenue plantings. It’s a moderately fast-growing species that likes water but will also tolerate periods of drought. Nitida has excellent pest resistance and is cold hardy down to 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
Sylvestris Palm: The Phoenix sylvestris is one classy palm! You may recognize it by one of its other names – Silver Date Palm, Toddy Palm, Wild Date Palm, and India Date Palm. Growing only 1-2 feet per year, it will eventually reach about 40 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide. It has a slender trunk with an interesting diamond pattern created by leaf scars and can have a special cut done to make the trunk really stand out. Cold hardy to about 15 degrees Fahrenheit, many landscapers are using this palm on golf courses, to line streets, and as centerpieces for luxury homes.
