Indian Mast Trees for Sale
Palmco has Indian Mast Trees for sale that have rapidly become the screening material of choice for landscape architects and landscapers.
The striking Indian Mast Tree, or Polyalthia longifolia “Pendula”, originated in India and Sri Lanka and is an exceptional subtropical substitute for the Italian Cypress.
It is also called the False Ashoka, Buddha Tree, Mast Tree, Weeping Mast Tree, and Indian Fir Tree.
It became popular in British India both because it resembles the Mediterranean Cypress and because its tall, stick-straight trunk was ideal for building ship masts, hence the name.
Polyalthia longifolia “Pendula” is a slender, upright evergreen tree, a shape not often seen in tropical trees. The layers of feathery, wavy-edged leaves that hang from drooping branches closely hug the straight, thin trunk. You may even think the tree has no trunk!
Leaf colors range from coppery brown when new, to light green, to a shiny dark green as they age. The natural color contrast makes a stunning show. In addition, fragrant star-like pale green flowers appear once a year in the spring and typically last for two to three weeks. Due to their color, they are barely noticeable, but attract butterflies and birds.
Indian Mast Trees are not very cold-tolerant and are best suited to USDA Zones 10a to 11. They prefer full or partial sun and well-drained soil. Young plants need protection from winds, but, once mature, the trees are remarkably flexible and will bend like bamboos in a storm.
These trees are excellent substitutes for the Italian Cypress, which seems to dislike Florida’s abundant rain and high humidity.
Indian Mast Trees are fast growing (to 30 to 45 feet) and need space to stretch out (to a full-grown width of 8 to 10 feet). Be sure to place them at least 10 feet from other trees or shrubs.
They are suitable for narrow spaces because they grow quite tall but stay slender.
Use them as architectural accents, to line avenues or driveways, as living hedges, and for privacy, noise and wind screens.
