Palms That Love Estero

You may already know that Estero is located in USDA Zone 10A. This means it is essential to choose palms for your clients that are perfectly adapted to that area of Florida. So, to help you with that decision, here are some palms that love Estero:

Let us introduce you to a rare palm, the Caranday Palm, or Wax Palm.

Originally grown in Paraguay, Argentina, Bolivia, and Brazil, the Caranday Palm has uniquely colored leaves ranging from silver to light blue to light green. This palm serves a useful purpose in its native environment because its leaves produce a wax that is used to make lipstick, candles, and even some car polishes.

Additionally, its trunk is so hard that it has been used in fences, floors, walls and even telephone poles! It is a slow grower that can reach 40 feet high and has sharp spines, so be careful when working with this extraordinary specimen.

The Caranday Palm is growing in popularity and makes a great focal point as a standalone or can be grouped together as an accent element.

Another beautiful option is the Fishtail Palm.

Fishtail Palms are native to Thailand and Southeast Asia and are considered clumping palms that grow to about 20 feet tall. We grow ours in the field and are proud to offer a unique variety including some with as many as 9 heads! Most nurseries will only offer them to you as single, double, or triple.

Fishtail Palms are gorgeous standalone pieces that are sure to draw serious attention. The secret to the visually stunning uniqueness of the Fishtail palm, as well as the scientific reason this palm gets its name and looks, is its uncommon bipinnate leaf structure.

During the summer months they will display beautiful arrangements of brightly colored 1” seeds. However, they are monocarpic. Meaning they only flower once at the end of their lifespan. But not to worry, there will be plenty of young canes to replace those that die off thanks to its clumping nature!

So, when it comes to locating an Estero palm tree nursery that has a wide selection of perfect palms for that area, and over 30 years of experience, Palmco should be your first choice. Be sure to give us a call at 239.283.1329 to ask questions or place an order. We are happy to help!
