Salt and Palm Trees
Daytona Beach, on the Fun Coast, enjoys a humid subtropical climate with two basic seasons – hot and wet (summer and fall) and warm and dry (winter and spring). Average temperatures rarely dip below 45° F, but designing a landscape near saltwater, such as along Florida’s Atlantic and Gulf coasts, can present some challenges.
Sea breezes carry salt spray inland and deposit it on plants. In a process called exosmosis, the salt pulls out water from the plant, which can result in burned, damaged leaves. This can also lead to defoliation. Soils near breaking waves also tend to be salty, and plants will struggle to absorb moisture and nutrients through their roots.
You can combat these detrimental effects by planting salt-tolerant palm trees in your landscape.
