Corpus Christi Climate
Corpus Christi is located along the Gulf of Mexico in South Texas in USDA Hardiness Zone 9b. It enjoys a humid subtropical climate that features hot, very humid summers and very short, mild winters.
Average night-time winter lows in January, the coldest month in Corpus Christi, average just below 50°F. The city’s coldest temperatures reached 26°F on five occasions, most recently on January 30, 1951, so frosts are not much of a concern.
Consider one of these versatile, eye-catching clumping bamboos from Palmco that will grow beautifully in Corpus Christi:
Alphonse Karr Bamboo is a dense bamboo from China’s Yangtze Valley that grows to average heights of 20 feet with 1- inch diameter culms and is one of the best screen or hedge bamboos. This Bambusa multiplex variety can also be used as a focal point in a planter or island with light trimming and maintenance. It has striking yellow culms and random green stripes that provide a golden glow in the garden. Alphonse Karr can withstand temperatures down to 15°F but thrives in hot climates, making it ideal for the Texas Gulf Coast.
Seabreeze Bamboo is a Palmco customer favorite. Native to Southern China, it is one of the most prolific species of clumping bamboo, quickly reaching heights of 35 to 40 feet to form a beautiful screen. When mature, Bambusa malingensis forms a graceful umbrella-shaped arch with attractive blue-white canes and is ideal for hedges and windbreaks. It can tolerate drought as well as flooding conditions, is salt tolerant, wind tolerant, beautiful, and can withstand temperatures down to 18-20°F.
