Cold Hardy Non-Invasive Bamboo

Cold Hardy Non-Invasive Bamboo

Bamboo is one of nature’s most versatile and useful plants, and the cold hardy clumping species are non-invasive and some of the most impressive bamboos in the world.

Palmco is Florida’s premier grower of top quality non-invasive clumping bamboo. We are one of the largest palm and bamboo plantations in North America and offer 15 breathtaking varieties of tropical and subtropical clumping bamboo to customers across the Southeastern United States.

Our clumping bamboo plants are available in a variety of sizes, colors and textures to help you create magnificent hedges and privacy screens, windbreaks, noise barriers, as well as stunning specimens that will provide visual impact in any landscape.

Consider one of these stunning cold-hardy clumping bamboos:

Angel Mist Bamboo (Dendrocalamus minor ‘Amoenus’) – One of our rarest Chinese clumping bamboos, Angel Mist at mature height has 3-inch diameter pale green or yellowish culms with dark green stripes and a waxy covering that causes it to be nicknamed Ghost Bamboo. It is a tight clumper with no lower branches and makes a colorful attention-getting centerpiece, privacy screen, living fence or driveway planting. Angel Mist Bamboos are cold hardy to about 25°F and grow to a typical height of 35 feet.

Graceful Bamboo (Bambusa textilis gracilis) – Also known as Slender Weavers Bamboo, this Chinese variety is the most graceful and lush of all bamboos. Mature plants are branchless on the lower third of the culms, enabling you to see the attractive 1” diameter canes without having to prune the plant. Graceful Bamboos have an upright growth pattern and are very well-behaved, making them ideal for narrow spaces and smaller yards. Graceful Bamboos are very cold hardy to about 15°F and grow to 20 to 25 feet.

Monastery Bamboo (Thyrsostachy siamensis) – Originating in Thailand, this beautiful bamboo has strong, extremely straight culms and can grow to 40 feet in areas where the soil is well-drained but consistently moist. It features small leaves on the top third that create a cloud-like effect. Monastery bamboo is perfect for tight spaces as a specimen or accent, and makes a superb windbreak. It is cold-hardy to 25 °F.

Seabreeze Bamboo (Bambusa malingensis) – This tough, bushy and very fast growing Chinese variety can reach heights up to 40 feet. The 2 1/2-inch diameter canes have a distinctive bluish-white tint in each section. Seabreeze is a very hardy clumping bamboo that can withstand temperatures down to 20°F. It is also drought-tolerant and salt-tolerant. When mature, it forms a graceful umbrella-shaped arch and is perfect for hedges and privacy screens. Its canes also make peaceful “bamboo sounds” when the wind blows.

If you’ve hesitated about using bamboo in a customer’s landscape for fear it will run rampant and be impossible to control, consider our non-invasive clumping bamboo varieties. They will stay in one place, won’t spread more than a few inches from the existing culms, and can tolerate periods of cold weather, including short periods of frost.
