What is Clumping Bamboo?

Clumping bamboo grows like most other shrubs. This is because it has a pachymorph rhizome system with thick, short roots that expand into close circular clumps by only a few inches each year. The new culms will grow outward from the center getting taller and wider in diameter each year.

Clumping bamboo is non-invasive and is easy to maintain and control. It makes a very attractive plant especially when limited to USDA Zones 8 to 10. This is because they are not tremendously cold hardy, though some varieties like Golden Goddess and Alphonse Karr can tolerate temperatures that hit as low as 15°F.
