Chinese Fan versus the European Fan
Ever wondered how to differentiate between these two types of palm trees? Well, let our experts give you the explanation you have been seeking!
Chinese Fan Palm
The Chinese Fan Palm (Livistona chinensis) is known for its fan shaped fronds, weeping look and large, spreading canopies. The fronds definitely make a beautiful statement if they are cared for well.
While they are called Chinese Fan palms, they are actually native to both China and Southern Japan. They typically grow as single trunk trees, but Palmco offers single, double, triple and multi- Chinese Fan configurations. The canopies of the Chinese Fan are unique. They are wide spreading, but their long leaf segments have a tendency to hang gracefully at their tips.
Chinese Fan Palms will often grow to 25 feet tall. They do well in zones 9A to 11, and are very slow growing. They are relatively tolerant to infertile soils but will respond well to good nutrition and prefer full sun exposure.
If you really want the palm to stand out in your installation, you might consider adding a Diamond Cut or the Palmco Cut to the trunk. It provides the tree with a uniquely stylized appearance.
Be sure that you hydrate this tree significantly once you have set it in place. They can be a little temperamental in the transplantation process. So, handle them with care!
European Fan Palm
Chamaerops humilis is the only palm native to Europe and is also known as the Mediterranean Fan Palm. Its fan-shaped leaves provide an exotic look in any landscape. Growing slowly to about 10 feet tall, it makes an ideal focal specimen in spaces of any size.
A popular variety that looks exotic in any landscape with its fan-shaped leaves, this palm also produces small yellow flowers in the spring. It is wind-resistant and very cold hardy. The hardiest of all palms with its attractive multi-trunked habit that forms rounded clumps. Growing to only about 10 feet tall, it is ideal as a focal point in spaces of any size.
It is wind-resistant, very cold hardy to 10 degrees Fahrenheit, is drought-tolerant, and does well in salty areas. The European Fan Palm is popular with landscapers and developers for its ability to thrive in a variety of locations and conditions.
