Why Choose Clumping Bamboo?

  • Clumping bamboos generally spread very slowly. Each new rhizome produces only one culm, located very close to its mother culm. They turn upward, becoming canes immediately, and are easily maintained.
  • Clumping bamboos won’t creep more than a few inches per year. In contrast, running bamboos send shoots out underground, traveling as far as 10 to 15 feet from the main plant, producing new culms all along the way. Running bamboo can easily grow out of control.
  • Non-invasive clumping bamboos originate in tropical and semi-tropical regions of the world, but many of them can tolerate periods of cold climate, including short periods of frost. The varieties we grow at Palmco are cold hardy to 15-30°F and grow very well in USDA hardiness zones 8 to 10.

About Seabreeze Bamboo

Native to Southern China, Seabreeze Bamboo (Bambusa malingensis) grows fast and can withstand temperatures down to 18-20°F. It forms dense upright clumps of dark green culms that can reach 40 feet in height. Smaller leaves make it more tolerant to windy and stormy conditions. It is also drought-tolerant, salt-tolerant, and one of the most wind resistant of all tropical bamboos, making it a perfect coastal bamboo for Florida, Texas, and Southern California.

The 1-1/2- to 2-1/2 inch diameter Seabreeze canes have a distinctive bluish-white tint in each section that make soothing “bamboo sounds” when the wind blows. It also has an open growing pattern with few lower branches enabling you to admire the beautiful canes.

Bambusa malingensis’ ability to form an umbrella-shaped arch when mature makes it well-suited to attractive hedges, privacy screens and windbreaks. It can form a very tight hedge quickly and can be kept at the height you want, or you can let it go and achieve its maximum height.
