We pride ourselves in our “green” growing processes that help us to essentially spoon feed our trees with all the necessary nutrients. And, the mulch we put on our palm beds has been recycled from our own plant wastes and by product materials which means we are preventing excessive use of the landfills in our area.
Our top of the line technologies and monitoring systems help us ensure that we reduce our water usage, prevent seepage and leaching of unwanted chemicals, and keep the soil around us fertile and healthy. We look forward to many more generations of palm tree growers here, so carrying for the environment around us is important.
Get to Know the King Alexander Palm
The name for the species was given to it as a means of honoring Princess Alexandra of Denmark who lived from 1844 to 1925. It has been referred to as “one of the world’s most beautiful trees, palm or otherwise.” That statement is reportedly credited to Robert Lee Riffle, an internationally recognized authority on palms.
King Alexander palms, though named after a princess from Denmark, are actually from a coastal rainforest that extends from southeastern New South Wales to northern Queensland in Australia. In its native environment, it often grows in lowland swamp forests. Yet, it can just as readily be found living at altitudes of up to nearly 2000 feet!
When allowed to grow of its own accord, the King Alexander is a single trunk palm. However, with some human manipulation it can be configured into groups of two and three. At Palmco, we grow all three versions of the King Alexander.
In the wild, you might find these trees reaching heights of 80 feet tall, but generally they grow to somewhere between 30 and 40 feet when planted in landscapes and yards. Thankfully, they are self-cleaning and reasonably maintenance free. But they do have some unique quirks.
The King Alexander does not enjoy cold winds, even though it can withstand temperatures as low as 26 degrees Fahrenheit. The drying winds create leaf tip burn. So, it is best that you plant it in an area where it will be fairly well-protected from these environmental issues.
Keep in mind that the King Alexander appreciates full sun and lots of water. However, it is important that you plant it in well-draining soil and start a regular regimen of fertilization to keep it as healthy as possible.
