A Chinese Fan Palm Education
While they are called Chinese Fan palms, they are actually native to both China and Southern Japan. These palms, part of the Livistona family, are the second most cold hardy within it. Most people are shocked to hear that these palms can withstand temperatures as low as 0 degrees Fahrenheit. Of course, that’s only for a limited period of time, but it is still quite impressive for a plant that is always assumed to be solely tropical.
Chinese Fans are well known for their slow growth. They tolerate infertile soils fairly well, but will certainly do much better with good nutrition. Full sun exposure is ideal for Chinese Fans, so make sure you pay close attention to that when determining where best to plant these in your landscape designs and layouts.
The canopies of the Chinese Fan are unique. They are wide spreading, but their long leaf segments have a tendency to hang gracefully at their tips. This gives the palm a weeping appearance. Some people love the look and others are not so fond. As always… beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
If you really want the palm to stand out in your installation, you might consider adding a Diamond Cut or the Palmco Cut to the trunk. It provides the tree with a uniquely stylized appearance.
Be sure that you hydrate this tree significantly once you have set it in place. They can be a little temperamental in the transplantation process. So, handle them with care! And, though they normally grow in single trunk formations, we do grow them in double, triple, and multi-trunk options.
