Alphonse Karr 101
Alphonse Karr bamboo is a non-invasive, clumping bamboo (we only sell this type of bamboo due to the problems associated with running bamboo). Clumping bamboos form tight clumps that do not run. And Alphonse Karr is one of the fastest growing bamboo varieties.
It is very easy to maintain and is quite colorful. It has bright green leaves and golden culms (canes) with green stripes. This bamboo can reach average heights of 20 feet tall. So, when planting, we suggest you space them about 8 to 10 feet apart because they will grow into one another.
As far as using this bamboo for screening purposes, Alphonse Karr is one of the best options and is most commonly used as hedge material around the world. Because the culms grow to 1 inch in diameter this makes it an easy hedge or screen to trim and maintain.
Because of its beauty, Alphonse Karr can also be used as a focal point in a planter or an island if you trim it lightly and keep it maintained. You may even want to add it to a decorative container. And, if you want to add an extra touch of beauty to this bamboo, expose it to direct sunlight where its culms will develop a slight magenta tint.
Once established, the Alphonse Karr bamboo can withstand just about any condition as it is incredibly drought tolerant and cold resistant. In fact, it is able to handle temperatures as low as 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Of course, it truly thrives in hot climates. It does well along the Gulf Coast of Texas and from Florida’s east coast all the way up to the Carolina Coast.
