What is Clumping Bamboo?
Clumping bamboo has a pachymorph rhizome system with short, thick roots that grow in a close circular clump, expanding very slowly by only a few inches per year. Running bamboo, in comparison, has runners that can spread underground 20 feet or more from the mother plant.
Clumping bamboo grows like any shrub. New culms (canes) grow outward from the center, near the mother culm, and grow taller and larger in diameter every year. Clumping bamboo is NOT invasive and is easy to control and maintain.
If you’ve hesitated about using bamboo in your landscape for fear that it will run rampant and be impossible to control, consider non-invasive clumping bamboo varieties. They are ideal as specimens and make great hedges and screening plants.
Popular Varieties of Clumping Bamboo for Zone 10a
Many of Palmco’s varieties of clumping bamboo will flourish beautifully in Zone 10a.
Alphonse Karr Bamboo is one of the best hedge bamboos. It is a dense Chinese variety that grows very erect to 20 to 25 feet. The 1- inch diameter culms of Bambusa multiplex ‘Alphonse Karr’ are bright yellow with random green stripes and give a golden glow to any landscape. It has low water requirements and is extremely cold-hardy once established down to 15 °F. Alphonse Karr does very well from Florida’s east coast along the Gulf Coast to Texas and up to the Carolina Coast.
Angel Mist Bamboo is one of our rarest Chinese clumping bamboos. It has 3-inch diameter dark green striped, yellow or green canes that are covered with a powdery wax, earning it the nickname “Ghost” bamboo. It makes a colorful attention-getting centerpiece, privacy screen, living fence or driveway planting, and will grow to about 35 feet.
Golden Hawaiian Bamboo, also known as Painted Bamboo, is an extremely beautiful and colorful ornamental bamboo in any setting. Its vivid yellow culms have random green vertical stripes that look like they were painted on. Bambusa vulgaris ‘Vittata’ is easily propagated and capable of growing to a height of 35 to 50 feet with 4-inch diameter culms in about 3 years, but is cold-sensitive and vulnerable to frost damage at 27° to 30° F.
Seabreeze Bamboo is a tough, bushy native of Southern China that grows very quickly to heights up to 40 feet. This beauty features 2 1/2-inch diameter canes with a distinctive bluish-white tint in each section. Cold-hardy to 20°F, it is drought-tolerant, salt-tolerant and an excellent performer in zone 9B. When mature, it forms a graceful umbrella-shaped arch and is ideal for hedges, windbreaks and privacy screens. Its canes also make lovely “bamboo sounds” when the wind blows.
