Dwarf Buddha Belly Bamboo

Best Varieties of Bamboo for a Privacy / Screening HedgeOriginating from Southern China, this bamboo species is extremely popular along the U.S. sunshine belt, including California, Hawaii, and Florida. It features small green leaves and culms with internodes that swell when stressed, hence Buddha’s Belly. The plant-swelling reaction makes it an excellent choice for beginners because it lets them know when the plant has an issue.

The Dwarf Buddha Belly can grow to heights between 12 to 15 feet tall and can withstand temperatures around 30 degrees Fahrenheit making it one of the shortest and cold sensitive of the bunch. The Dwarf Buddha Belly is fast growing. It will grow to full maturity within three years.

Asian Lemon Bamboo

Hailing from Southern China, this bamboo variety will reach heights of 25 feet. It is a great choice for privacy screening and is quite beautiful. The new shoots have a pink and peach tone with green stripes. But when the plant reaches the height of maturity, the culms become a bright lemon yellow and maintain the green stripes.

When using this bamboo as a focal point simply trim the lower branches to desired height to show off the thick-walled culms (canes). The new culms or shoots have pink and peach tones with green stripes. When established the culms are lemon yellow with green stripes and it has dark green leaves. Asian Lemon would be a great addition to any home or garden.

The Asian Lemon can withstand temperatures down to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. It is frost tolerant and enjoys sun to partial shade.

Seabreeze Bamboo

If you are looking to cover a second story structure, Seabreeze is a great option because it can reach 40 feet in height. It is tolerant of high winds and cold temperatures as low as 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Seabreeze is hardy and bushy and has blue-white canes that are quite attractive.

Important Advice for Planting

Unlike many other plants, bamboo root balls should not be torn apart. Because bamboo rhizomes and roots only grow during specific times of the year, they won’t heal like other plant roots. We suggest you plant during the spring and fall to ensure the best health and growth.

When it comes to maintaining your clients’ bamboo privacy fence, we advise trimming off dead or unhealthy looking sections during the summer months. Culms usually only live for five to seven years. They should be removed when they start showing signs of deterioration.
