Best Bamboo for Privacy

When your clients ask for bamboo hedges or privacy screening, it is important to note how quickly they want these hedges and screens to be functional. You should also understand the USDA hardiness zones where you will be planting these bamboos. At Palmco, we only sell non-invasive clumping bamboo, so you never have to worry about our bamboo running out of control.

Here are our top selections for privacy installations:

Seabreeze (Bambusa malingensis). Originating from Southern China and reaching heights of 40 feet tall, Seabreeze is an excellent option for screening and windbreaking installations. Its attractive blue-white canes coupled with hardy and bushy foliage make it a graceful addition to any yard.

Oldhamii (Bambusa oldhamii). Also, from Southern China, this is a great option especially if you are hoping to screen a second story space. Oldhamii grows up to 60 feet in height. It is a low maintenance giant, and a hardy bamboo that is cold tolerant to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. It is one of the most common bamboos grown in the US.

Graceful (Bambusa textilis gracilis). Yet another Southern China native, Graceful is particularly cold hardy and can endure temperatures as low as 15 degrees Fahrenheit. It is a very erect bamboo, reaching heights of 25 feet, while having a gracefully nodding head. It’s very fast growing and can reach its maximum height in as little as 2 to 3 years.

Golden Goddess (Bambusa multiplex ‘Golden Goddess’). Though this is a relatively short bamboo, only growing to heights of 10 feet tall, it is very tight and bushy and makes an excellent hedge. You can trim this bamboo to maintain any desired shape and plant it in areas that get as cold as 15 degrees Fahrenheit.

Dwarf Buddha Belly (Bambusa vulgaris ‘Wamin’). This bamboo hails from Burma and will grow to 12 to 15 feet tall. It is fast growing and can reach full height within 3 years. The unique culms and green foliage make it a beautiful hedge option as well as a conversation piece.
