Bamboo Suggestions

Bamboo growing zones are based on temperatures. The bamboo you choose should be based on how cold it can get in the intended locale. Bonita Springs doesn’t get very cold, so all of these bamboo suggestions will suit the area well:

Alphonse Karr. A native to China, this bamboo can withstand temperatures as low as 15 degrees Fahrenheit. It forms beautiful tight clumps and will not run even though it is a fast-growing variety. It can reach average heights of 20 feet tall and therefore it is important to plant these between 8 and 10 feet apart. It is one of the most commonly used hedge bamboos, but also makes a great choice for privacy screens.

Nana Bamboo. This stunning species from Thailand is a beautiful ornamental with very small leaves, an upright growth habit and thick culms. It is naturally branchless near the ground and tends to arch at the top, creating a feathery, delicate umbrella-like canopy. Nana’s medium height (to 25 feet) makes a beautiful statement in any landscape. It is cold-hardy to 28 °F.

Timor Black. This is absolutely the best black bamboo for landscaping to date. When the culms are mature, they are a smooth, shiny, chocolate black with green stripes. You won’t find any lower branching, but the culms are nicely spaced and can be up to 3 inches in diameter. We suggest using it as a specimen because it is distinctly beautiful. Keep in mind that it can reach heights of 40 feet tall.

Emerald. Originating from China, this makes a great screening or specimen piece. It can reach heights of 40 feet and can withstand temperatures as low as 15 degrees Fahrenheit. It is a very erect and tight clumper with small leaves and a branchless lower half. The most interesting aspect is the light green culms with somewhat persistent white blooms on long internodes.
