Bamboo Landscaping for Privacy

There are many reasons to use plants in landscaping. One of the most important is privacy. The right plant can add not only great beauty to a property, but can screen a section of that property off from surrounding areas. This creates a sense of serenity, safety, and meditative calm, even on the busiest streets. If you are looking for a privacy plant for landscaping, then clumping bamboo from Palmco should be on the top of your list. It is easy to maintain, it is visually striking, and it provides great screening.

Why Choose Clumping Bamboo?

  • Clumping bamboos are some of the most impressive bamboos in the world. They are available in a variety of sizes, colors and textures and can help you create magnificent privacy screens, hedges, windbreaks, noise barriers, and stunning specimens in any commercial or residential landscape.
  • Clumping bamboos generally spread very slowly and won’t creep more than a few inches per year. In contrast, running bamboos send shoots out underground, traveling as far as 10 to 15 feet from the main plant, pro-ducing new culms all along the way. Running bamboo can easily grow out of control.
  • Non-invasive clumping bamboos originate in tropical and semi-tropical regions of the world, but many of them can tolerate periods of cold cli-mate, including short periods of frost. The varieties we grow at Palmco are cold hardy to 15-30°F and grow very well in USDA hardiness zones 8 to 10.

Types of Bamboo

We at Palmco offer many varieties of bamboo, but when it comes to giving privacy, here are two that we love:

Seabreeze

The ability of Seabreeze Bamboo to form an umbrella-shaped arch when mature makes it well-suited to attractive privacy screens, hedges, and windbreaks. It can form a very tight hedge quickly and can be kept at the height you want, or you can let it go to achieve its maximum height of up to 40 feet. The canes have a distinctive bluish-white tint in each section and make soothing “bamboo sounds” when the wind blows.

Monastery

Perfect for tight spots, Monastery Bamboo is tight-clumping and tall. It features small leaves on the top third that create a cloud-like effect. Its lower portion tends not to grow foliage, which makes each clump appear almost tree-like. This beautiful bamboo has strong, extremely straight culms that can grow to 40 feet in areas where the soil is well-drained but consistently moist. Monastery bamboo makes an excellent windbreak or privacy screen.

Emerald

Tall and elegant, Emerald Bamboo is a joy to work with. It is light green with a persistent white plume and grows to a height of 40 feet. This is a great one for privacy for both its height and density, but it is also a stunning visual specimen. It is a favorite of ours for its beautiful visual appeal as well as for its functionality.
