To choose the right palm for your project, it’s important to consider soil, temperature, sunlight, water and size. The needs of palm trees vary by species, but knowing how tall a palm can ultimately grow is one of the most important factors.
Some palms grow very quickly, and the small palm you planted may grow to 50 feet or more, interfering with power lines and overwhelming the landscape.
Small palm trees typically reach no taller than 15 to 20 feet at maturity. While 20 feet may seem quite large to you, the large varieties can grow to 80 or 90 feet. Keep in mind, however, that some palm species grow so slowly that they will stay short for many decades.
Smaller varieties make stunning single specimens or focal points, while large trees, whether dense and majestic or slim and willowy, make an impressive statement.

Adonidia Palm
This versatile and attractive palm, also called the Christmas Palm, grows moderately fast to a height of 10 to 20 feet. During the summer, it produces light green flower buds that become creamy blossoms and, in December, the flowers are followed by green fruits that turn bright red as they ripen.
European Fan Palm
A popular variety that looks exotic in any landscape with its fan-shaped leaves, this palm also produces small yellow flowers in the spring. It is wind-resistant and very cold hardy. Growing to only about 10 feet tall, it is ideal as a focal point in spaces of any size.
Pindo Palm
This is one of the hardiest landscape palms currently in production. It has graceful, feather-like blue-green fronds and slowly grows to an average of 15 feet tall and 10 feet wide. It’s also called the Jelly Palm due to its bright yellow fruit that can be made into a jelly.

Canary Palm or Canary Island Date Palm
This slow-growing palm is valued for its bold appearance and its extreme hardiness, allowing it to grow well throughout much of the southern U.S. It has a massive canopy and caliper, and typically grows to 50 or 60 feet. The majestic shaft resembles a pineapple but needs to be manicured to keep a nice appearance.
Foxtail Palm
This noble palm grows to about 30 feet in full sun and has one of the most spectacular foliage displays of all palms. It has a slender, self-cleaning trunk and stunning, fluffy looking fronds. Leaf scars often reflect a copper color in the sunlight. Foxtail is a regal addition to any landscape.
Royal Palm
Popular along the streets of many cities for their grace and beauty, Royal Palms have a smooth gray trunk, a bright green crownshaft, and dark green arching fronds. They bloom with yellow flowers in the summer. Royals can reach up to 60 or 70 feet tall with a growth rate of around a foot each year.
This Cuban palm can be sensitive when transplanted.
