Palms In Georgia’s Climate
Georgia’s climate ranges from USDA Zone 6A to 9A, but much of the state lies in the 8A-8B range. This makes Georgia particularly well suited for palms such as the Mule Palm, capable of thriving in climates as cold as 8A.
The cold-hardy Mule palm is a sterile hybrid of the Pindo and Queen palms.
Both the Pindo and Queen are cold-hardy trees, which accounts for the Mule palm’s temperament. Growing routinely as tall as 20 feet, the beautiful Mule palm makes an excellent specimen.
Chinese Fan Palms (Livistona chinensis) are the second most cold-hardy palm in the Livistona family.
They can withstand temperatures slightly below 0°F for limited time periods.
They have a wide-spreading canopy and long leaf tips that hang gracefully, giving it a weeping appearance. Adding a Diamond Cut or Palmco Cut on the trunk of these palms has become a trend.
Another great option is the Pindo Palm (Butia capitata) which can tolerate temperatures as low as 5°F, is wind resistant and performs well in the Florida Panhandle and up the eastern seaboard to the Carolinas.
