Florida Fancy (FF) is defined by the Florida Grades and Standards Manual as “an exceptionally healthy and vigorous palm that is perfectly formed and foliated (subject to the natural growth of the species).” This is the most desirable grade of palm tree. Fishtail Palm (Caryota mitis)

The swirled green leaf blades of this beautiful palm are divided into many segments resembling the fancy tail of a goldfish, hence the name. These are bipinnate palms, meaning there are side branches off of the main branch, and they are the only palms with this unusual leaf anatomy.

Fishtails are also clustering palms and make wonderful privacy screens that are a great tropical alternative to bamboo. It likes a semi-shady/semi-sunny area where it will get watered regularly. Fishtails grow at a moderate rate to about 20 to 25 feet and have taken the landscape world by storm in the past 15 years. At Palmco, we grow our Fishtail palms in the field and keep a limited inventory of container material available. Many of our field grown materials have as many as 9 heads and they make stunning stand alone centerpieces.

Sylvestris Palm (Phoenix sylvestris)

This low-maintenance palm has a variety of other names – Sylvester Palm, Toddy Palm, Wild Date Palm, Silver Date Palm, and India Date Palm. No matter what you call it, it’s one classy palm. It’s a slow grower (1 to 3 feet per year), but can reach heights of 40 feet.

Its slender trunk has an interesting diamond pattern created by leaf scars, and can have a special cut done to it to make the deep orange of the trunk really stand out. The leaves are typically a silvery blue-green color. The palm’s bushy fronds have stiff, pointy leaves with spines along the stems, so they should be kept a safe distance from driveways and walkways. It is very cold hardy, drought-tolerant and moderately-salt-tolerant

Triangle Palm (Dypsis decaryi)

This is a gorgeous palm with an unusual shape and coloring, making it an attention-getter in any landscape. Instead of a typical crownshaft, Triangle Palms have overlapping leaf bases that form in three vertical columns set approximately 120 degrees apart on the main stem, forming a triangular shape. (They are also known as Three Sided Palms.)

The leaves are a unique powdery blue-grey and arch gracefully upward from the trunk. Use the Triangle in tight spaces or near walls where you would hesitate to plant other ornamental palms. It is a slow to moderate grower to 20 or 25 feet, very drought-tolerant once established, and self-cleaning.
