Dwarf Coconut Palm Trees For Sale

Dwarf Coconut Palm Trees For Sale

It may be a challenge to find dwarf coconut palm trees for sale.

Why?

Mostly because they are really called Green Malayan or Dwarf Malayan palms.

Interestingly enough, the use of the word “dwarf” here does not refer to the tree’s size, as it can reach heights of 50-80 feet. Certainly not a dwarf! Instead, the dwarf designation refers to the size in which it will begin to produce the coveted coconut.

Once it achieves 2-3 feet of grey wood, it will begin to produce fruit. This is roughly half the size of the Maypan Coconut Palm; thus the name. Its trunk is thinner than the Maypan too, but it can grow just as tall.

The Green Malayan is a Jamaican certified palm.

These palms are self-pruning, dropping their fronds on their own. Once established, they are known for their ability to endure extraordinarily high saline conditions and drought. However, if you plant them where they will receive regular salt spray you should make sure they are hosed down frequently.

The significance of the Jamaican certification is found in the palm’s resistance to Lethal Yellowing Disease. It’s a systemic disease caused by a bacteria that is transmitted by the planthopper (a bug that usually has a leaf like appearance and hops from plant to plant like a grasshopper).

Lethal Yellowing Disease is known to infect coconut trees in Florida. However, the Jamaican certified seeds used at Palmco are resistant to Lethal Yellowing Disease.
