Established in 1984 in the sleepy community of Bokeelia on Pine Island, Florida, Palmco currently has more than 600 acres planted with the choicest palms and bamboos, ranging from common to exotic. There are two general types of bamboo that are best described by how they grow – the running varieties and the clumping varieties. Clumping bamboos generally spread very slowly and are non-invasive. New culms turn upward, becoming canes immediately, and are easy to maintain, creeping no more than a few inches per year from the mother culm. At Palmco, we grow 16 beautiful varieties of clumping bamboos, ranging from dwarf to mid-sized to giant bamboos.

Bambusa malingensis
Also known as Seabreeze Bamboo it’s origin is from Southern China. Seabreeze Bamboo is a tough, bushy and very fast growing variety that can reach heights up to 40 feet. It is a beautiful upright grower with many tightly spaced canes that feature a distinctive bluish-white tint in each section. Drought-tolerant and salt-tolerant, it’s an excellent performer in Florida’s planting zones of 9a and up. It’s also one of the most wind resistant of all tropical bamboos. When mature, Seabreeze forms a graceful umbrella-shaped arch and is ideal for hedges, windbreaks and privacy screens. The canes make lovely “bamboo sounds” when the wind blows.
Bambusa vulgaris
‘Wamin’ (also known as Dwarf Buddha Belly Bamboo) This dwarf bamboo has very unusual swollen internodes. The potbellied appearance gives it a unique, exotic look. There is no other bamboo like it in the world, and the plant is definitely an attention-getter. Fortunately, it produces the most consistent “bellies” in warm, humid climates such as Florida’s. This clumping bamboo grows to a height of 12 to 15 feet and has 4-inch diameter culms. It is somewhat cold-sensitive and may suffer frost damage at 27o to 30o, but the roots will not be damaged.
Dendrocalamus asper
‘Hitam’ (also known as Black Asper) If you have lots of room and need a very tall bamboo, Black Asper from Indonesia can reach amazing heights of 80 to 100 feet. This species has 10-inch to 12-inch diameter matte black culms. The large powdery culms grow straight with a slight bend as they climb towards the sky. Although this species can withstand frost, it prefers warmth and humidity. Black Asper is an impressive ornamental bamboo that is also highly prized for its timber.
