We grow dozens of palms. Palm trees grow to varying heights. While a 20-foot palm may not seem so small, there are other varieties that grow to 80 feet or more. Here is a sampling of our 20-plus palm tree varieties:
Small Palm Trees (under 20 feet)
European Fan Palm (Chamaerops humilis)
A popular variety that is found throughout the Mediterranean, this palm looks exotic in any landscape with its fan-shaped leaves. It produces small yellow flowers in the spring. It enjoys a sunny, moist, and well-drained area where it will get watered regularly. It is wind-resistant and very cold hardy. Growing to only about 10 feet tall, this fan palm is ideal as a focal point in spaces of any size.
Lady Palm (Rhapis excelsa)
This spectacular clustering palm reaches 6 to 12 feet. It has moderate to low light requirements, making it an ideal palm for use in container plantings, beds, borders, and as a privacy screen. It is also a superior interior palm and is often used in places like bank lobbies, hotels, and shopping centers. This slow growing species has classic fan shaped leaves that need shade in order to stay dark green.
Medium Palm Trees (20 to 40 feet)
Queen Palm (Syagrus Romanzoffiana)
Queen Palms grow best in full sun, adding as much as 6 feet a year to a maximum height of about 40 feet. The lacy fronds are dark green and pinnate with double rows of leaflets. Flower clusters burst from large pods during the summer. In early winter, green fruit clusters appear. The spherical-shaped fruit eventually turns bright orange and hangs in long clusters.
Triangle Palm (Dypsis decaryi)
This is a gorgeous palm which has an unusual shape and coloring, making it an attention-getter in any landscape. It has a triangular crown shaft with an assortment of colors: purple, silver, brown, and green. The leaves arch gracefully upward from the trunk. Use it in tight spaces or near walls where you would hesitate to plant other ornamental palms. They get to a maximum height of about 25 feet and love full, hot sun.
Large Palm Trees (over 40 feet)
Canary Palm or Canary Island Date Palm (Phoenix canariensis)
This slow-growing palm is valued for its bold appearance and its extreme hardiness, allowing it to grow well throughout much of the southern U.S. It has a massive canopy and caliper, and typically grows to 50 or 60 feet. The majestic shaft resembles a pineapple, earning it the nickname Pineapple palm, but needs to be manicured to keep a nice appearance.
The Royal palm is considered by many to be the most beautiful palm in the world. The Royal palm is an architectural dream, this is what makes it such a great choice for high end homes, gated communities, resorts, shopping centers, and to line streets (for example Miami’s famous Biscayne Boulevard is lined with Royal Palms) creating a beautiful tropical barrier.
