Atlantic City’s Climate

Atlantic City is rather cold, at least in comparison to the shores of Florida, and can be a challenging place to grow palm trees. It has cold, hard winters, with snowfall of 10 to 50 inches per year.

Fortunately, we offer several varieties of cold-hardy palms that are well-suited to USDA Zone 7B.

The Windmill Palm is an example of a palm that can grow well in a cold climate.

The Windmill palm is fully capable of withstanding cold winters, and is capable of growing as far north as Canada. Widely used, and quite elegant, it can add a sense of sophistication to any property that it graces.

The Pindo or Jelly Palm is a tall, solitary palm that comes from the open forests of Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.

Butia capitata can tolerate temperatures as low as 5°F, is wind resistant and does very well in the Florida Panhandle and up the eastern seaboard. It has graceful blue-green fronds that arch dramatically from the trunk, nearly sweeping the ground. Pindo slowly grows to an average of 15 feet tall and 10 feet wide, and may take some pruning to keep it looking groomed.

The European Fan or Mediterranean Fan Palm (Chamaerops humilis) is a popular variety that looks exotic in any landscape. It features fan-shaped leaves and produces small yellow flowers in the spring. It is wind-resistant and one the hardiest of all palms.

Growing to only about 10 feet tall, it makes a stunning focal point in spaces of any size.

Palms and Landscaping

Part of what landscapers do – part of what helps them define a space – is choose plants that do more than just take up space and look good. The plants they choose articulate feelings and moods, and few plants are as emotive as palm trees.

Palms are capable of triggering powerful memories and feelings; they are the kinds of trees that we put on postcards, in advertisements, and on wall posters. As such, they are particularly well suited to define spaces in any number of dramatic ways and are an invaluable tool for landscaping.

If you are looking for palm trees that will survive in Atlantic City, Palmco can help.
