Palm Trees VS Palmetto Trees
There are several differences between the palmetto and the palm tree.
The most significant difference is that a palm tree is generally much larger than a palmetto.
Some species of palms, like the Royal Palm, can grow 80 to 100 feet tall. A palmetto, on the other hand, will generally only reach 30 to 60 feet. The Sabal Palmetto is one of the taller palmettos available.
Palm tree trunks grow vertically, while the main stem of some palmettos typically stays on or just below the ground and grows horizontally.
A palm tree typically has fan-shaped fronds (palmate) or feather-shaped (pinnate) fronds, and the shape varies widely depending on the species. The Sabal Palmetto has a costapalmate leaf, which means that it curves or arches backwards. Each has about 40 to 60 3-foot long leaflets.
There is also a difference in their fruit.
Many palms produce larger, heavier fruits, e.g. the coconuts of the Maypan and Green Malayan palms or the large orange, ornamental dates of the Queen Palm.
Palmetto trees have much smaller fruits that usually resemble berries.
Using Palmetto Trees for Landscaping
Palmetto trees are often used in landscaping because they do not grow nearly as tall as some palm trees. Many landscapers like them because their smaller flowers and berries do not require as much clean up as do palm trees.
They work best for smaller-scale landscaping projects because the larger landscaping projects may need larger trees to fill empty spaces.
Palmettos are also generally more wind resistant than some of their palm tree cousins. This could be because of the shape of their leaves, but they are also much lower to the ground.
These factors make them ideal for areas that are prone to hurricane-like winds.
Whether you need a single magnificent palmetto for an exclusive client or several hundred palm trees for a large resort development, we have many beauties for sale to satisfy all of your landscaping requirements.
