Mast Trees Fort Myers – Wholesale
If you love the look of tall, narrow, columnar Italian Cypress trees, but prefer not to use them in your Fort Myers landscape designs, consider wholesale Mast Trees from Palmco to achieve a similar effect!
The greatest problem with growing the Italian Cypress in South Florida are related to our abundant rain and high humidity. Our climate makes the trees more susceptible to root rot and to fungus and cypress canker disease, which cause the tree to develop brown patches and die back.
The striking Mast Tree, or Polyalthia longifolia “Pendula”, is native to India and Sri Lanka and works exceptionally well as a subtropical substitute for the Italian Cypress. It is also called the False Ashoka, Buddha Tree, Indian Mast Tree, Weeping Mast Tree, and Indian Fir Tree.
Polyalthia longifolia “Pendula” is a narrow, upright evergreen tree, a shape not often seen in tropical trees. It has layers of feathery, wavy-edged leaves that hang from drooping branches which closely hug the straight, thin trunk.
Leaf colors range from coppery brown when new, to light lime green, to a shiny dark green as they age. This natural color contrast makes a spectacular show. In addition, fragrant star-like pale green flowers appear once a year in the spring and typically last for two to three weeks.
Mast trees will grow to be about 30 to 45 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 8 to 10 feet. Their natural vertical form will attract attention in any landscape, but they can be trimmed to maintain a specific size or shape.
They are best suited to USDA Zones 10a to 11, and are not recommended for use north of coastal Hillsborough County on Florida’s west coast or Indian River County on the east coast.
They prefer full or partial sun and well-drained rich clay, loam or sandy soil. Mature Mast trees are drought-tolerant and suitable for xeriscaping. Young plants need protection from winds, but, once mature, the trees are remarkably flexible and will bend like bamboos in a storm.
The Mast tree’s unusual, compact form and lush green foliage make it an excellent choice for color and, when closely spaced, for screening. Consider them to line an avenue or driveway, as tall hedges, as architectural accents, and as privacy, noise and windbreak screens.
