Bottle Palm Tree Facts
If you have a client requesting Bottle Palm installations, it’s important to educate yourself about these palms. Thankfully, the experts at Palmco can tell you everything you need to know about this palm variety.

The Bottle Palm is truly eye catching thanks to a bizarrely swollen trunk and stunted height. Many people assume that the swollen trunk is there for the purpose of storing water during drought, but there is no specific reason for its unique design.

Bottle palms originate in the Mascarenes. These are a set of islands off the east coast of Madagascar. This remote group of islands in the Indian Ocean is home to a wide array of curious flora and fauna.

Bottle palms are moderately drought and salt tolerant. When you plant them, it’s important to ensure that they are placed in well drained soils that are similar to beach environments. They will require irrigation and plenty of water, especially during dry spells.

These palms will do best in warm climates. They prefer USDA zones 10B-11 because they can be easily damaged by freezing temperatures. They are not cold tolerant, and you will see some damage to fronds when the temperatures hit 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Don’t touch the cold damaged fronds until after the winter is over in order to protect new growth. Once spring arrives, you can trim the damaged fronds.

As far as fertilization, we recommend starting in the spring with a slow release fertilizer. You should do additional applications in the summer and fall. Bottle palms are susceptible to potassium deficiencies, so make sure the fertilizer you choose is designed to address that issue.
These are slow growing palms and will only reach a max height of 12 feet tall. They make exceptional accent palms and will definitely add a tropical and unique look to any landscape installation.

If your clients are set on adding unique looking palms to their yards or landscapes, here are a couple of other options to consider:

Foxtail (Wodyetia bifurcata). This fast-growing palm hails from Northern Australia and is also suitable for USDA zones 10B-11. It is stunningly beautiful. Its leaf scars give it a unique look and will often reflect a copper color when the midday sun shines on the trunk. This gives it an otherworldly glow.

Silver Bismarckia (Bismarckia nobilis). Originating in Madagascar, this is one of the most gorgeous fan palms around. Its leaves are a powdery silver blue that you can’t help but stare at.
