Caring for Silver Bismarckia Palm Trees

If your client has been looking for the most desirable, massive, and elegant fan palms available, the Silver Bismarckia is the right choice. In fact, it is no surprise that the scientific name for this distinctive palm is Bismarckia nobilis. Its symmetrical crown and stout trunk make it an impressive focal point in any yard or landscape.

Since Silver Bismarckia tend to dominate the spaces they are in, we don’t suggest planting them in small yards. In fact, they are huge trees that can reach heights of 60 feet tall with a canopy as wide as 16 feet! So, wherever your installation takes you, be sure to leave enough space for this amazing tree to reach its full potential.

Hailing from Madagascar, Silver Bismarckias do everything big. Their leaves can reach widths of 4 feet. And, it isn’t surprising to find that their trunks can be as thick as 18 inches in diameter.

You will find that these trees do best in USDA growing zones 10-11. This is mostly due to the fact that freezing temperatures can cause them significant damage. Aside from that, though, caring for these palms is not a time-consuming task once the tree is established in an appropriate location.

We suggest planting them in full sun, but they can survive if partial sun is all that is available. Windstorms are dangerous for them, so plant them in a wind-protected spot. Soil deficiencies will be your greatest struggle because the Silver Bismarckia requires specific amounts of boron, magnesium, and potassium. You can rectify that issue with a controlled-release fertilizer.

When the palm is young, be sure that it gets the proper amounts of water, but once it’s established, it will demonstrate a significant drought tolerance. And, only prune the tree when there are dead leaves. If the leaves are only starting to die pruning them too early will deplete the tree’s necessary potassium supply and attract pests.
