Cold Weather and Palm Trees

Not all palm trees are as cold-hardy as the Windmill Palm.

In fact, some cannot leave the southernmost tip of Florida or parts of California where there’s little danger of frost. If the weather gets below a certain temperature (usually well above freezing), they may not survive.

Cold can damage the palm tree’s trunk, preventing it from getting enough water and nutrients. This can cause serious problems because the tissue inside the trunk does not grow back, and the palm will eventually die if it is severely damaged. Lower temperatures also slow growth.

Pindo Palm: The Pindo Palm, or Jelly Palm, is native to Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. It can handle temperatures as low as 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit.

Canary Palm: This palm tree is a native to the Canary Islands. It can handle temperatures as low as 20 to 25 degrees Fahrenheit for short periods.

European (Mediterranean) Fan Palm: This extremely hardy palm can actually tolerate frost conditions down to 10 degrees Fahrenheit. As long as these conditions don’t persist, this palm will survive.

Silver Bismarckia: One of the most beautiful and desirable fan palms around, this Madagascar native can tolerate cold temperatures down to 15 to 20Fahrenheit when reasonably mature.

Windmill Palm: Another of the most cold hardy varieties, the Windmill Palm, native to China, is capable of withstanding temperatures reaching 5 degrees Fahrenheit.
