Melbourne Florida Climate

Brevard County, also known as the “Space Coast,” is located along Florida’s eastern peninsula in USDA Zone 9b. The region has a humid subtropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. Temperatures can vary dramatically from north to south and east to west within the county.

Melbourne, in particular, is located far enough south that it straddles subtropical and tropical climates, so all months have a mean temperature of 64.4°F or higher. Although there is no record of snow or snow flurries in Melbourne for the last 150 years, the area does have an average of 2 or 3 days of frost in winter.

When purchasing palms for your landscape, it’s important to ask us about the varieties that will grow best in your area. USDA hardiness zones are not set in stone. Cold-hardiness in Melbourne may not be an issue, but other factors, such as rainfall, soil, drainage, wind, humidity, daylight, and heat, will impact the health of your palms.

Types of Palm Trees

Most palm trees can be differentiated by their fronds:

  • Pinnate leaves, or “feather” leaves, generally have two rows of leaflets that remind you of feathers on each side of the stem.
  • Palmate leaves, or “fan” leaves, have leaflets that radiate out from the base of the leaf. They remind you of an open hand with fingers radiating out from the palm.
  • Other frond variations include costapalmate, bipinnate, simple, bifid, or, in some cases, a completely irregular leaf shape.

Palms also grow in two different patterns – solitary or clustering.

A solitary palm has one tall, straight trunk like a column, and new leaves are produced at the top.

Clustering palms grow new stems from ground level (developing mostly underground), but the stems are attached together in a clump and are part of one plant. The multi-trunk species of palm trees are usually shorter than the single trunk species.

Two examples of our palm varieties that grow well in Melbourne include:

Lady Palm

This beautiful palm has moderate to low light requirements, making it ideal for understory and indoor plantings. Other uses include privacy screening, single specimen planting, container planting, beds, and borders. The maximum height of this clustering palm is roughly 6 to 12 feet. It needs moist, well-drained soil and plenty of water, as well as shade to keep the fronds dark green.

No damage will occur to the Lady Palm at 25°F, but temperatures that drop to 15-18°F can be fatal.

Windmill Palm

This beauty, also called Chinese Windmill Palm and the Chusan Palm, has palmate fronds that grow upward. Each frond has about 30 deeply divided leaf segments ranging from yellow-green to dark green. The fronds vibrate in the wind and look as though they are spinning… like a windmill. It grows very slowly and can reach 40 feet tall, but most top out at about 25 feet.

Windmills love sunny, moist and well-drained areas, but shield them from saltwater spray. This palm is stunning when planted in multiples.
