Growing Palms in Zone 10A

Whether you need a single spectacular focal specimen for an exclusive client or several hundred palms for a large resort, Palmco can meet your design specifications. Here are just a few examples:

Areca Palm: Palmco is a leading supplier of field-grown Areca palms in a variety of sizes. The dramatic clustering palm features many trunks that spring up from the base of the plant. Its fluffy, fine-textured fronds give it a lush, full look. Dypsis lutescens can reach heights of 15 to 20 feet, making them well-suited to privacy screens, hedges and landscape backdrops. The canopy of these palms can grow 8 to 10 feet in diameter, so they will need enough space to grow properly.

Fishtail Palm: You can recognize the beautiful Caryota mitis palm by its swirled layers of ruffled fronds that resemble the jagged tail of a goldfish. It is a bipinnate palm, the only palm with this unusual leaf anatomy. Fishtail palms are clumping palms and make a great alternative to bamboo. Reaching 20 to 25 feet tall, they are spectacular when used as single specimens or as backdrops for other plants, and have exploded in popularity in recent years. At Palmco, we grow them in the field, some with as many as 9 heads.

Maypan Coconut Palm: If you have a beachside landscape in Englewood that demands tall, classic, sun-loving tropical palms that are salt-tolerant, Cocos nucifera from Jamaica is the perfect choice. This palm has a single-trunk and grows at a moderate rate to 50 to 80 feet tall. They are cold hardy but do best in Zone 10b and the coastal areas of 10a. Maypans are low-maintenance; when a frond dies or a coconut is ripe, it will fall from the tree without help. Palmco only grows coconut palms from Jamaican Certified seeds.

Roebelenii (a.k.a. Pygmy Date Palm): One of our smaller palms, Phoenix roebelenii makes a big statement. The slow-growing palms reach heights of about 10 feet. They can be used outdoors in a variety of settings such as parks, gardens, as well as in a container on a deck or in an entryway. They are great in shopping centers and restaurants. Pygmy Date palms are often grown as doubles and triples to make a multi-trunk specimen, but they can be grown with up to 6 heads, creating a beautiful focal point in any landscape.
