Palm Trees That Thrive In New Jersey
Face it, New Jersey isn’t exactly known for its tropical weather.
Yet, we can provide you with palm trees to create that ambiance for your clients and their customers or visitors.
Several of our palm varieties are suitable for zone 7b.
The first palm for your consideration is our Florida state tree, the Sabal Palm.
It’s also known as the Cabbage Palm due to its edible central bud, the heart of the palm. This palm can be grown farther north than most other palms and is extremely hardy. It’s a relatively inexpensive palm and a particularly slow grower.
These trees are generally harvested from the wild and when used appropriately have the ability to add a bit of Southern charm to even the most Northern areas. They provide that “kick back and sit a spell” warmth your clients are looking for.
They can grow up to 60 feet tall and are quite wind resistant.
The second palm to consider is the Windmill Palm.
This palm is capable of withstanding temperatures of 5°F and grows to an average height of 25 feet, though some do reach 40 feet tall. This palm is used worldwide in gardens and parks and is originally from central China. It is highly valuable to landscapers, design architects, palm enthusiasts and gardeners as it can be grown as far north as Canada.
Although it has a sturdy trunk, the Windmill Palm is still susceptible to strong gusts of wind.
When choosing where to plant Windmill Palms, space them 6 to 10 feet apart and in an area not prone to intense direct wind. These gorgeous trees will add elegance to any structure, residential or commercial.
