Where to Buy Bamboo Plants in Florida
Your search for where to buy bamboo plants in Florida can end right here at Palmco! Boasting over 600 acres on beautiful Pine Island in Florida, Palmco’s bamboo nursery is one of the largest in North America.
We carry 15 different varieties of clumping bamboo species. These bamboos grow slowly allowing their culms to increase in diameter and height each year. Compared to running bamboo, clumping bamboos don’t send out underground shoots. Instead, they grow a lot like shrubs. They are ideal as screening and hedge plants and can add year-round evergreen appeal and unique texture to any landscape installation.
Using Bamboo in Landscape Design
There are a number of methods in which to best utilize clumping bamboo. We suggest that you use them in the following ways:
• Screening for privacy: Bamboo is a relatively inexpensive method of planting a privacy screen and this is its most common use in the US. It is fast growing and can range from six to 60 feet in height. It also makes a great barrier, no matter the setting.
• Hedges: If you are working in a more formal setting, most clumping bamboo, especially the taller varieties, can be pruned and shaped several times a year, allowing you to create and maintain the form you desire. Taller hedge options will not take more than one or two growing seasons to reach the height you want.
• Windbreaks: Strong winds do not have intense effects on bamboo. They weather storms nicely. If canes do snap, as they are hollow and lightweight, they definitely will not do the same kind of damage a downed tree would cause.
• Specimens: When looking to create visual impact and add tropical beauty any landscape is better with bamboo. When combined with palm trees, Mast trees, and other tropicals, they are stunning additions to pool and patio surroundings.
Meet some of our favorite clumping bamboo
Dwarf Buddha Belly (Bambusa vulgaris ‘Wamin’) - You will notice the unusual bulges, or “bellies,” on each culm’s internodes that make this bamboo a real attention getter. Fortunately, Florida’s warm and humid climate allows it to produce its most consistent bellies. Culms can grow up to 4 inches in diameter and the Dwarf Buddha Belly will reach a height of up to 15 feet. It can handle temperatures down to 30 degrees Fahrenheit and is a tropical bamboo.
Graceful (Bambusa textilis gracilis) - This Chinese variety, also known as Slender Weavers, is the most graceful of all bamboos, as the name suggests. Its attractive, 1-inch diameter canes are readily visible without pruning because it has few lower branches. Graceful Bamboos grow in an upright pattern and are easy to maintain. They are very hardy, fit nicely in country and city landscapes, and reach heights of 25 feet. They even work well in narrow, small yards.
